Blog: Soup Sunday

Greenbank Cemetery at Dusk

Welcome!
This blog is dedicated to Canada’s rich rural history. There’s so much to discover in this great nation of ours, far from thoroughfares and city life. It doesn’t cost much to get out and explore—a tank of gas and a few dollars for a bowl of soup should do. What a pleasure to travel rural back roads and byways unearthing long forgotten places along with stories about Canada’s early settlers who sought a better life in the New World so long ago.

Escape to Canada’s gorgeous countryside. Treasures abound. Every trip offers the opportunity to refresh us in mind, body, and soul. Perhaps we’ll find a quaint little market that bakes butter tarts just the way our Grandma used to make. Or maybe we’ll discover a little “hole in the wall” teashop that serves a savoury bowl of homemade soup coupled with a fresh crusty roll. Maybe it’ll be an ice cream cone made with real cream that doesn’t cost a small fortune.

Even better, once our stomach and sweet tooth have been satisfied, perhaps we’ll discover an old homestead, a plaque dedicated to the life of the town’s first forebears, or a charming main street reminiscent of days gone by. Old pioneer cemeteries await. Abandoned military sites, murals, the odd and unique all sit, ready to welcome any passer-by. Who knows? We might even bump into a celebrity (yes, even famous people need to get out for a spin in the countryside every now and then.)

If we head out with an open mind and heart, we’re bound to come home refreshed and excited to have experienced a few hours experiencing Canada’s exceptional history.
